Strategy that Creates Transformational Results

 To be successful, companies must make bold moves to unlock new sources of growth while optimizing resources. Making the right moves involves using analysis to choose the right opportunities, and challenging traditional planning by reallocating resources—people, money, and management—to new areas. 

Strategic Planning

Strategic planning is a management activity that is intended to set priorities, focus energy and resources, strengthen operations, ensure that employees and other stakeholders are working toward common goals, establish agreement around intended outcomes/results, and assess and adjust the organization's direction in response to a changing environment. 


It is a disciplined effort that produces fundamental decisions and actions that shape and guide what an organization is, who it serves, what it does, and why it does it, with a focus on the future. 


Effective strategic planning articulates not only where an organization is going and the actions needed to make progress, but also how it will know if it is successful. 

Challenges

It is all too common for strategic planning to become a revenue forecasting and budgeting activity that produces sub-optimal results or strategic inaction. 


Familiar challenges include:  

 

  • Direction:  Is the vision so clear that all your leaders know what to do? Is the direction being set based on a market assessment and relevant / accurate information? What will influence the future? What are the opportunities and risks? 
  • Ignoring the Elephant:  Do you understand or address the elephant in the room?  How do you challenge and address the topics? How do you marginalize internal politics and build cohesion?
  • Oversimplification:  Are you prepared to plan for an increasingly complex and competitive world? How do you avoid the "oversimplification" pitfall?
  • Accountability:  Who owns execution of the strategies and plans? Due by when? Executed to what degree? How do we define and measure success?
  • Engagement:  Do you have the right stakeholders involved? Should you engage the troops or your customers for buy-in, bottoms-up perspective, or to challenge leadership's thinking? Are your executives prepared or able to make the necessary changes?
  • Consensus:  Is consensus needed and by whom? How do you build alignment?
  • Feasibility:  Innovation and stretching the organization can lead to feasibility constraints. How do you right size the plans, guide the planning, and/or enable their feasibility? How do you mobilize strategy?
